Last night was the final Full Council meeting before May’s local elections. So not surprisingly feelings ran high, with accusations of political point scoring flying across the chamber.
But even the most neutral of observers would admit that outside the votes taken, you wouldn’t think that Labour were so heavily outnumbered. All our councillors spoke on more than one occasion, often succeeding in getting the Tories rattled. Which as we’re the opposition, you could say that is our job.
One Tory cabinet member was so riled that he ended up having a spat with the Mayor, who of course is a member of his own political party!
Some of the Conservative jibes were petty in the extreme, and really uncalled for. One of our members was criticised for not attended a particular meeting, when in fact she was over in Australia seeing her granddaughter for the first time in 7 months, a trip that had to be previously cancelled due to Covid.
Cllr Karl Wilson got flak for asking 5 questions relating to the West Marsh and accused of electioneering. To which Karl responded that of course he was going to ask about West Marsh issues, as he’s the elected councillor for that area!
Very few Tories opened their mouths, which I wonder what the residents in their wards would have to say if they knew. And when they did brown nosing was the order of the day, with the constant praising of development schemes which actually started when Labour were in control of the authority.
All in all, I think we are in good spirits for the battle ahead.
