The local elections in May were a great disappointment for Labour, there’s no doubt about that. And as a result we have an overall Conservative majority on North East Lincolnshire for the first time.
So it is important that we challenge the ruling group at all times. Indeed that challenge began at the council’s Annual General Meeting. Labour members pointed that in opposition the Tories had said the cabinet is too large, but in office they’ve kept it at the same number. From the backbenches they claimed Labour took all the Scrutiny Chairs for themselves, now lo and behold they’ve done the same themselves!
It is this kind of pressure we intend to put the Tories under, to see if they are true to their previous committments. And in the meantime, those of us fortunate enough to remain on the council are starting to resume our roving surgery sessions that show we are the party that truly cares about people. If you want to join us at any time, we’ll be glad to see you on the doorsteps!
Cllr Tim Mickleburgh, Labour South.
