Children's service funding "on the slide"

Latest figures show that Councils all over the country have overspent their Children’s social care budgets by a whopping 10% last year alone! This indicator is alarming, as children are suffering, through poverty and neglect and the number is rising year on year as the austerity plan carries on regardless.

The number of vulnerable children in county Council areas  placed under a child protection plan – which means they are at significant risk of harm – was 25,259 in 2017. This compares with 18,702 in 2011 – a 35% rise.

It’s no different in North East Lincolnshire,  in 2010 there were 152 kids being looked after by the council, This number was steady for a number of years previously. Now the figure is over 350 and at a cost of £50000 per child, this is placing a significant budget pressure on the whole of the Council.

This also shows families are suffering and Children are paying a price, it is well documented that children in care have worse outcomes than children not in care due to an array of problems. It is also well documented that in general, these same children when they reach adulthood, will call on public services more than the average person. Thus creating a future impact on the public purse!

Demand-led costs are largely beyond the control of any local authority, nationally they face funding pressures of £3.2bn over the next two years.  Overspending on children’s services means that cuts will need to be made to other vital services, or taken from reserves. These two approaches are unsustainable and the Government need to recognise this!

But worst of all, families are struggling, children are suffering and a legacy is being created right now for future generations, who will have to pay for this Tory Government’s lack of vision, lack empathy and out-right bloody minded stubbornness, in light of fact and figures available.

This video from last year is still worth a watch!
