When I first became a Labour councillor, one of the things I was pleased to publicise was the subsidy to the bus service that goes to Europarc. Not only does this help those to take up much needed employment opportunities, but the route is the only one that serves the residents of the West Marsh.
Now as a resident of the ward and someone keen about promoting public transport, I was naturally interested to read about the consultation being held on the No.1\2\20 services. And really, it doesn’t make good copy!
One option is halve the service frequency, another to limit it to peak hours (and avoid both Lord Street and Corporation Road altogether) and the last to withdraw the £220,000 subsidy entirely and leave things to the free market. In other words the 100,000 yearly users would be at the mercy of Stagecoach bosses.
Now I’m not surprised at this. Typical Tories don’t use the buses, and aren’t really bothered about adversely affecting those who use them. But what about the speeches coming from a certain Mr Johnson about buses?
It seems local Tories can’t even be bothered about asking their own Government for more money to retain the services!
